Multi-Root and Referral Spawning

Impactium grows the way living systems grow: from spores, by referral, into one connected mycelium. Two ideas make this work — multi-root partitioning and referral spawning — and they are the same idea seen from two angles.

One chain, many roots

Impactium is a single chain with shared consensus, but its state is partitioned into roots. Each partition has a root — an origin Entity from which a whole downline of members descends. There is one ledger, one total order, one Merkle root; but the state is organized into these partitions rather than being one flat pool.

This was a deliberate choice over the alternative of many independent sub-chains. Independent chains would create exactly the problems Impactium exists to avoid: cross-chain reading, dangling references, and trust gaps between partitions. With shared consensus, references always resolve and the whole record has a single, verifiable order — while still carrying the partition structure that referral lineage needs.

Referral is the only door

Wallets come into existence only through referral. Except for the founding roots — planted in a single all-or-nothing act when the network is founded, before which there is no one to refer you — you cannot create a wallet on your own; an existing member must spawn you. Spawning is not a separate "create wallet" step bolted onto identity; spawning is creating a lineaged Entity. There is no other path in.

When a member spawns you:

  • you become an Entity with a lineage: your parent (who spawned you), your root (the partition you join), and your depth in that lineage;
  • you inherit your referrer's partition — you join their root;
  • and the spawn is recorded as the first impact on you, weaving you into the Chain of Impact.

A member's root doubles as their partition key. Multi-root is not a separate chain concept layered on top of referral — it is the referral mechanism. Growing the network and partitioning the network are one act.

Spores

The referral mechanism is called spawning for a reason: the network grows like a mycelium, each member able to send out spores that germinate into new lineaged Entities under them. The lineage that grows from the founding team becomes the founding downline — the ancestry through which the founders' residual flows, forever.

Organizations spawn too

Referral is not only for people. An existing member can spawn an organization wallet (#O) — a DAO — into their partition, then bring in partners and members. The same single mechanism grows humans, organizations, and (eventually) sentient AIs into one connected mycelium.

Why it matters

Growing exclusively by referral means the network is never a scatter of anonymous, disconnected keys. Every actor has a place in a living structure, an upstream that made them possible and a downstream they make possible in turn. That structure is what lets value flow along Chains of Impact — and, increasingly, what lets the network measure a member's proximity to a subject when it weights their voice in governance.
